1. Can temperature change affect my aquarium?
Yes, temperature is one of the most important factors in your aquarium. Rapid changes in temperature can harm your fish and corals immune systems making them susceptible to illness.
2. How do I maintain the temperature in my aquarium?
To maintain the temperature in your aquarium, start with a thermometer to accurately track the temperature. If the temperature is too high, a chiller may be required to cool down the water and keep it stable.
3. What is a chiller?
A chiller is a piece of equipment to offset the heat that is given off by pumps and lights that run in your aquarium. There are several different types of chillers, so be sure to do your homework before installing one. The most common allow your aquarium water to run through it. This allows the water to be cooled off before returning to the aquarium. This is a gradual change in temperature, so it will not affect the health of your aquarium.
4. What type of lighting do I need for my aquarium?
The type of lighting you choose will depend on the type of aquarium you have. Fish only aquariums do not require much lighting. Basic lighting, like fluorescents or T5's, are the simplest way to illuminate your aquarium. They are available in a variety of colors for different uses.
Reef aquariums will require more intense lighting, average 3 - 5 watts per gallon. Corals and invertebrates need light to survive. Metal Halides and VHO/Power Compact combinations are a popular choice and penetrate water to allow coverage on the sand bed of the tank.
